Education and experience:
Jarno Hoekman, MSc, PhD, is an assistant professor in Innovation Studies at Utrecht University. He performs research at the interface of pharmaceutical sciences and science, technology and innovation studies. Jarno obtained his PhD in Innovation Sciences from Eindhoven University of Technology. Before coming to Utrecht University he also worked as a post-doc in pharmacoepidemiology at the University Medical Center Groningen.
In his research Jarno examines the relation between pharmaceutical regulation and innovation. He is particularly interested in understanding how drug regulatory science environments change due to scientific and technological advance as well as the institutional strategies of stakeholders. He also conducts research on the global diffusion of rules and standards in the pharmaceutical sector and how this influences the production of evidence and access to medicines in low and middle-income countries. Within the Utrecht Centre he is involved in PhD projects on marketing authorisation regulations for innovative gene-, cell- and tissue-based therapies, drug licensing models that aim to facilitate timely access to medicines and emergent pharmacovigilance systems in African countries.
